Changing the Story
In the early 80’s the Castro district of San Francisco was the epic-centre of the AIDS crisis. Within a 10 mile radius more than 1,000 people had died and 2,000 more looked set to follow. With this as a backdrop Mike Smith and others hatched an audacious plan that became the NAMES Project, turning a protest into a bridge that united families across the country and changed the conversation about HIV/AIDS and gay and lesbian rights forever. Mike distills the learnings from this powerful time.
